Tetris-O-Lantern

1. Topic:
A programer turned his pumpkin into a playable Tetris game.

2. Article Title:
Pumpkin carved into a playable Tetris-O-Lantern

3. Article Source:
Gizmag

4. Summary:
A programer took a pumpkin, some led lights, and creativity, and managed to turn a pumpkin into a playable game of Tetris that even keeps your score. It plays just like regular Tetris, and even has a joystick( the pumpkin stem.) The only complication is the occasional short in the wiring. Really this should be expected considering all the moisture inside the pumpkin.

5. Reaction:
I think that the whole concept is awesome. Personally, if I knew how, I would make my own pumpkin/Tetris game. While having said that I also think that it will have some complications. The first one is how to keep the wiring dry. I guess he hasen't figured that out if he is still having shorts. All and all I think that the kids this Halloween are going to stop by his house not just for the candy, but also to check out this marvelous, ingenuitive new design.

6. World Impact:
Truthfully It's not having that much of an impact world wide. The biggest thing I can think of is maybe he has started a new programming trend. Plus I think maybe his program may go world wide for all the other programers who want Tetris games in their pumpkins(he had to recreate it since none of the programs were compatible with his homemade led light board.) Also, having said that, I think that it's incredibly cool how he came about making the Tetris-O-Lantern. Now having said that I don't think it will go completely  world wide I think it may end up in his neighborhood. The reason I think this is because I think everyone on the block will want one, and will probably commission several Tetris-O-Lanterns.

Weekly Review #8

This week we have covered a decent amount of things, but the main topic has been ways to stay real online. The new vocabulary words this week are represent, persona, avatar, anonymous, and inhibited. Our web 2.0 this week was Glogster.com. Also this week we did a DDL(Digital Drivers License), we haven't done a DDL in several weeks so there's a little change. Another thing we were asked to do is to think up 5 ways to "stay real online" and put them into a glog. Finally I did a article on a new robotic toy called an Attacknid(this link goes to the original article.)

As always I will start with defining my brand new, super awesome vocabulary words.

Represent- How you present yourself to others. A good way to visualize this is lets say Bob is a nice guy, but on World of Warcraft he represents himself as a jerk.

Persona- Image or personality you portray to others. This is kinda like represent, but it leans more towards changing your personality not just your actions.

Avatar( no not the blue monkey people)- An image or graphic that represents you online. A good example would be the little picture you always see when you look at my blog.

little kitty avatar, found here, 6/1/08

Anonymous- Hidden identity. This could also be me because I don't put any personal information on here.

Inhibited-  Being careful or restrained about your actions or impulses. A good example would be someone not texting in the middle of class because he/she doesn't want their phone taken away.

Then we were asked to go onto Glogster and create a "glog" using a list of ways to stay real online that we had to think up. Mine will be posted at the end of this blog.

Now to address the little issue of what I think about Glogster. I think that it is a good tool to use for poster/flyer making and maybe as far as concept/mind mapping, but if you want to use it to like make slideshows this would not be for you. I personally am more of a transition person, so not being able to hop from slide to slide got aggravating. Also I didn't like the feel of the way you created/edited the glogs. So, for a quick recap, Creative? Definitely. Has more than just a few ways you can use it? Not so much.

Next, the DDL topic this week. The topic for this week was Digital communications and safety. The lessons included ways we communicated digitally( cellphones, Instant Messaging, etc.), and it included ways to spot fake emails that want you to disclose personal information.

Lastly my blog I did on Attacknids. These new robotic toys look like 3-4ft tall spiders with armor. From what i read they are pretty cool. Apparently they were built to fight each other. They even can shoot projectiles( right now they are just foam discs but later they are supposed to be darts as well.)

That's all for this week. Be sure to come back next Friday for another installment of Payseur Weekly Blog.

The Attacknid

1. Topic
A new type of robotic toy called the Attacknid is coming out .

2. Article Title
Combat Creatures launches the "Attacknid" toy robot

3. Article Source
Gizmag.com

4. Summary
A brand new type of robotic toy is coming out. Also from what I gather in the article, they plan on making it to where the robots battle each other. The idea for these new toys came from creator Jamie Mantzel.

5. Reaction
I think its a cool idea. I mean who wouldn't want a disc slinging robotic pall to terrorize the household with. Really my only concern is if it will be durable. Like many toys of this age, will it break in a week, or can it survive a few years. Truthfully for the price of $112 unless it has a 2 year warranty on it I am not going to risk it.

6. World Impact
As for the world, I think it is already showing signs of a "world" toy. But when it comes down to impact, not so much. Now if they could take that design and turn them into 10ft tall walking monstrosities, then I would be impressed. Another thing that's concerning me is if the robot will do as the controller says. Now I don't mean like will the robots revolt or anything, but will the controls be properly attuned to the robots movement.

Weekly review #7

This week has felt like it has crawled by. I mean really, it feels like a snail could move faster than this week. We also,  have talked about a lot of things. Including our new web 2.0 device this week  WeVideo. For our brand new terms, they are as follows upstander, bystander, target, offender, escalate, and  de-escalate. We also were asked to take a bullying quiz here is the link. We also made a chart about what targets and upstanders can do to de-escalate the problem. Finally, I did a current event article on a new type of speaker that looks like a satellite.

First off( this is just an authors side note) if you have never heard of cyber bullying or even just plain bullying, then count yourself lucky. It is cruel, wrong, and mean. Don't ever do it. People all over the world kill themselves daily because of it.
stop cyberbullying, found here, created 3/30/07

As always I will start my weekly break down with the vocabulary.

  • Upstander- the person who knows about the bullying and wants to stand up to the bully, and help the victim in any way possible. Always be an upstander!
  • Bystander- the person who sees the bullying but does nothing to try to help the victim. He turns a blind eye to it all. Don't never, ever, be a bystander.
  • Target- The person who gets bullied. The victim. The people who get bullied are usually different or new. Always try to be nice to these people.
  • Offender- the person who bullies. He/she comes toward you with either the intent to harm you or having malicious intent.
  • Escalate- something that makes the problem worse. An example would be retaliation.
  • De-escalate- Something done to make the violence of the bullying decrease. An example would be to talk it out with the bully.

WeVideo is an awesome type of movie maker similar to Animoto, yet completely different. I like the fact of you can insert pictures and add text in front of them, but it doesn't have that 3-D feel. For mainly that reason I would recommend Animoto, this for me seems superior to WeVideo.  We were asked to make a we video asking bystanders to become upstanders when it comes to bullying. Mine is right below here.

Okay, like I said earlier, we were asked to contribute ideas to the grander scheme of how targets and bystanders can de-escalate a bullying situation. From this chart I will pull 4 examples from each side to allow you to better understand what you can do for yourself, and for others.

Targets
  • Report it
  • Ignore it
  • Save evidence( it can be used to incriminate the bully later)
  • Don't instagate
Upstanders
  • Report it
  • Support the victim
  • help stop the violence
  • confront the bully without being offensive
All of these are prime examples of what you can do to de-escalate  the situation, but these are not even close to all of the possible ways to accomplish those ends.

Also, as I said earlier, I did a blog post last week on a speaker called The BeoPlay A9. It is this, "above average size speaker" that is so round it looks like a satellite dish. For the complete post, click here

I'm sorry for the long wait for my latest installment of  Payseur Weekly Blog, but hopefully it was worth it. I don't think there will be one next week, so I'll see you all the Friday after next.

The BeoPlay A9

1. Topic:
The BeoPlay A9 is a new type of speaker

2. Article Title
The BeoPlay A9- it's a speaker, not a satellite dish.

3. Article Source
I received this article from Gizmag.com

4. Summary
The BeoPlay A9 is a new type of speaker. It is flat, curved, and looks like a satellite dish. It is also touch sensitive.

5. Reaction
Truthfully for the whopping price of $2,575 I think it's utterly worthless. All it really is designed for is to look flashy, and be able to stream music from your iPhone, iPad, or Android device remotely. Sure it may be able to play music as soon as its linked to your phone, but their are multiple different nifty devices where you can plug your phone in and listen to music. Not only are these devices designed for the same thing but they are a whole lot cheaper. Overall I think if they lowered the price way down I honestly would buy it because it's unique. But lets get real here who has $2,500 to burn?

6. World Impact
I think that this has almost little to no impact on the world. For one touch based systems are already around and will continue to evolve. For two all it's really used for is streaming music from your phone to the speaker. Another really good reason would be that several times in Wall-mart seeing this awesome little speaker, whose name slips my mind, for $20 that plugs into your cell phone audio plug and pumps out loud, good quality sound. One the other hand I can say that I like the look of the speaker. It is compact and small unlike the huge block(ish) speakers that most people are accustomed to.

Weekly review #6

This week has been amazing for me it just flew by. We have covered a lot of topics including a new web 2.0 device called make beliefs comix. Our new digital literacy terms are self disclosure, reciprocate, and sexting (we had a short list this week.) The topic on DDL(digital driver's license) this week was digital health and wellness.I also did a blog post on the Kymera.

I will start as always with defining the new terms of this week.

Self disclosure- sharing private, sensitive, or confidential information about yourself with others. This means if some creepy dude comes up to you and asks,"where do you live " it's not smart to tell him.

Reciprocate- to give in return. This one is easy to understand, give and you shall receive.

Sexting- sending or receiving sexually explicit photos or videos through text or other digital devices. First off sexting usually refers to the sending of nude photos via a text. Sexting is extremely dirty, no one will respect you for it nor will they like you any better for it.Try asking yourself," How will this make him/her feel",or" If I wouldn't do it why would he/she do it." In short don't do it.

Picture of a magazine article about sexting, got from Flicker.com, 4/15/09
We were also asked to contribute ideas on ways to avoid sexting, and ways to build a relationship online. For your benefit I will list three from each category below.

Ways to avoid sexting
  • Change the topic
  • Date people with good morals
  • Have self respect
Ways to build a relationship online
  • Be nice to them(this one is obvious)
  • Show them you care
  • Skype long distance
These examples are not the only nor the best ways to avoid sexting,or on ways to build a relationship online. Feel free to experiment.

Our web 2.0 device for the week was Make Beliefs Comix. Make Beliefs Comix is nothing more than an awesome way for you to make your comics come to life. We were asked to make two strips showing a way to build a relationship online, and a way to avoid sexting. Make your own at makebeliefscomix.com

Lastly we did an exercise on digital health and wellness on DDL. The information portrayed consisted of good posture, making sure to take a stretch break every 30 minutes, and not to get addicted to the internet. Also, as a little side note, if you either have the urge to/do share your every meal on Facebook, you may be addicted to the internet.

My article this week was on a new type of propulsion powered body board. For more information on the Kymera check my article link at the top of the page. Also, I have the original article linked here.

That's all for this week be sure to comeback next Friday for yet another installment of Payseur weekly blog.
